President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the new airport in Bileiyfahi will be completed and operational within 30 months. The project, awarded to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), includes 36 hectares of land reclamation, expected to be completed in eight months. The airport will feature a 1,500-metre runway and all necessary support facilities.
In his address to island residents, President Muizzu highlighted a series of infrastructure upgrades. Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) will handle the water and sewerage system overhaul, while MTCC will implement long-term harbour and erosion solutions by February next year.
The President also announced the expansion of Bileiyfahi School from four to twelve classrooms, and the upgrading of the island’s health centre to a 16-hour service facility with additional wards and staff resources.
Further development plans include the construction of a modern mosque this month and the phased development of sports facilities, including a football field and courts for handball and volleyball. Funding for these projects has been allocated in the upcoming budget.
President Muizzu emphasized that these developments are vital for Bileiyfahi’s long-term progress and assured residents they would proceed without delay.
