Nominations have opened for the Maldives Media Council by-elections.
According to the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and the Arts, two membership positions, one each for a media representative and general public, are open for nominations.
The general public slot was vacated after a member resigned while one of the members representing the media will become vacant on 28 April 28, the Ministry said.
The deadline to file nominations is open until 2:00 pm on 18 March.
The duly completed application form must be submitted to the Ministry's email, [email protected].
The criteria for membership include being 18 years of age or older and must not have been convicted of a criminal offence including drug trafficking. In addition, the applicant must not have a criminal conviction in the past two years, nor must he or she have a conviction in the past 12 months about a published article in a newspaper or magazine.
The law does not require members elected from the general public to have a background in the media. The 15 member council serves a two-year term.
