Voting has concluded in the primary election of the ruling party, the People's National Congress (PNC), in preparation for next year’s Local Council Elections.
The voting process commenced at 0900hrs and concluded at 1600hrs. PNC witnessed a notable interest from 298 members across various constituencies contesting for the party’s ticket. These are for 84 positions in 42 contituencies. While the voting has concluded, currently the vote counting is underway.
Speaking to PSM News, PNC Local Council Election Campaign Manager and Inguraidhoo's Parliament Member Ibrahim Falah described the polling process as smooth and incident free, likening it to a national election in terms of preparation and organisation. A total of 44 polling stations have been established across the country, with 21,000 eligible voters registered, he said. He added that these figures were higher than what the party expected.
According to PNC, many other candidates seeking PNC tickets for council and women’s development committee elections have already secured nominations unopposed. These individuals candidacy can also be views through PNC's Party Portal.
