Reiterating that unity is the cornerstone of national advancement, the President stated that collective solidarity is vital for achieving common goals, driving development, and nurturing a peaceful and harmonious society. In closing, he recalled the unity demonstrated after the tsunami, noting how Maldivians rebuilt their lives through resilience, cooperation, and mutual support as one united people.
In a National Unity Day message shared on social media, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that Islamic values guide Maldivians to uphold unity, compassion, kindness, and mutual care in all national efforts, and to work together in nation-building. He added that during the tsunami and other challenging periods in the country’s history, the strength and recovery of the Maldivian people have stemmed from the moral character they uphold as Muslims.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also shared a social media message, offering prayers for Maldivians to remain united, compassionate, supportive, and courageous, and seeking continued divine protection, guidance, and mercy for the nation.

Today marks 21 years since the December 2004 tsunami, which affected all but nine inhabited islands in the Maldives. The disaster claimed 82 lives, left 26 people missing, and displaced around 15,000 individuals. In honour of the unity shown in response to the tragedy, the Maldivian Government has designated 26 December as National Unity Day each year.
