The Speaker of Parliament, Abdulraheem Abdullah, announced during today’s parliamentary session that Ahmed Azaan, the Member of Parliament for Hithadhoo Central Constituency, has been appointed to the Security Services Committee (241 Committee) and the Finance Committee.
Azaan replaces Vilimale’s MP Mohamed Ismail, who previously represented PNC on the 241 Committee, and Henveiru North MP Ahmed Aifan, who represented PNC on the Finance Committee. The appointments were made per parliamentary rules, which allocate committee memberships based on the representation of political parties.
This is not Azaan’s first time on the two influential committees. He has previously served on both the 241 Committee and the Finance Committee, bodies that play a crucial role in parliamentary oversight.
The Finance Committee is tasked with ensuring that state institutions’ expenditures are in line with the law and the approved budget, safeguarding that public funds are spent as intended by Parliament. Meanwhile, the Security Services Committee, established under Article 241 of the Constitution, oversees the country’s security services and includes members from all political parties represented in Parliament.
