His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called upon the international community, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), to stand united in advocating justice, dignity, and peace for the people of Palestine. He made the remarks while speaking at the “SCO Plus” Meeting held on Monday in Tianjin, China.
The President observed that this year the Maldives commemorated 60 years since attaining independence and joining the United Nations, emphasising that the nation remains as steadfast in its commitment to the principles of peace, dialogue, and diplomacy as it was in 1965.
He stated that the Maldives is profoundly concerned about the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people. He reiterated the nation’s unwavering support for the Palestinians’ legitimate right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
On numerous occasions, President Dr Muizzu has strongly condemned the Israeli occupation government and denounced Israel’s inhumane actions against Palestinians as a blatant violation of international law and a grave infringement of human rights.
President Dr Muizzu is currently undertaking an official visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping to attend the SCO Summit.
