Senior leaders of the Democrats Party, former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla, have decided to rejoin the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), following the passage of a resolution at the party’s National Assembly held today.
The resolution, presented by Women's Democrats Leader Fathimath Hamda Mohamed at Nasheed’s request, emphasized the need for a unified and effective opposition to contest the upcoming Local Council Elections and contribute to shaping the country’s future.
While the resolution was adopted, it has sparked internal debate within the party, with some members voicing concerns over the direction of the Democrats. Responding to questions about the party's future, Hamda stated that further clarity will emerge in the coming days.
This development follows a recent political consultation between Nasheed and MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, during which both leaders agreed that reform and national progress require collective effort.
MDP has not yet issued an official statement on Nasheed and Eva’s return, though its National Council had previously passed a resolution expressing willingness to collaborate with all political parties.
