The newly appointed chairperson of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Hassan Latheef stated that his target is to make way for Former President Mohamed Nasheed to run in the Presidential Electins 2018 as MDP’s candidate.
After the succession of referendum taken for the chairperson elections in capital Male, atolls and Sri Lankan capital Colombo, Hassan Latheef said that the party’s internal administration will be strengthened and everything will be done to enable Nasheed to run for the Presidential Elections in 2018.
“These are the things we will mostly emphasize. Hence the electoral activities will be strengthened in the atolls,” said Latheef, who won 14,457 votes from the referendum.
Hassan Latheef added that the main obligation of a chairperson is to identify the issues within the party’s internal administration and accomplish the party’s political charter. He noted that, so far, MDP has not seen much internal disputes.
“But during [former chairperson] Ali Waheed’s term served abroad, most of the decisions were not taken by him, but the deputy leaders and officials, who have done a great job in arranging everything,” added Hassan.
Noting that the atolls are vital to win an election, Hassan said that more activities should be focused in the atolls if MDP is to win the elections.
The referendum was taken as Hassan Latheef was the only candidate for the post. The referendum saw 14,457 votes in favor of him, 127 against and 45 votes were nullified.
After the succession, Former President Nasheed had congratulated Hassan Latheef on twitter and posted that, with the new chairperson, the party will be strengthened and bring betterment to the nation.
