The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has officially opened bidding for the development and operation of tourism resorts in Shaviyani Atoll Nalandhoo and Hankede in Addu City, signaling major investment opportunities in both the northern and southern extremes of the Maldives.
In its announcement, the ministry confirmed that Hankede will be developed as an integrated tourist resort with a minimum capacity of 1,000 beds, aligning with the government’s broader tourism expansion strategy.
Hankede (Addu City) was previously designated for halal tourism under the former administration. However, on February 2, Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim announced its removal from this list. The current government planned to initiate development this year, with the goal of bringing the resort into operation within this term.
Nalandhoo, located in Shaviyani Atoll, is one of the northernmost islands available for resort development. Interested parties can access bidding and tender documents through the Ministry's website, and an information session will be conducted virtually via Zoom.
This marks the second round of bidding for Nalandhoo, which was previously leased for aquaculture but is now being repositioned for tourism development.
Interested parties are encouraged to submit bids by 10:00 on November 12, and attend an information session by registering via email before 12:00 noon on October 22.
