Former President Mohamed Nasheed has criticized the policy of building airports on every island, calling it a major obstacle to national development.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, Nasheed commented on the opening of M. Muli Airport, saying that while improving inter-island connectivity is vital, constructing airports on each island is not a sustainable or effective approach.
He added that the Kulhudhuffushi Airport was poorly executed, and warned against building airports in Thinadhoo and Fainu, calling them missteps in planning and resource allocation.
In contrast, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the benefits of Muli Airport at its official inauguration today, stating the project would unlock economic opportunities for the entire Mulaku Atoll.
He noted the airport project began 14 years ago and required an additional MVR 100 million to complete under the current administration.
"This airport will be a gateway for advancement in many sectors," the President said, adding that road development in Muli is scheduled for 2026, with the agreement already signed.
