National Security Committee of the Parliament has amended the penitentiary and parol laws so that the former President Mohamed Nasheed would stay a member of the MDP but lose him the presidency of the party.
The law was passed in today’s committee meeting with the unanimous vote of all members present.
In the first amendment to the law of penitentiary and parole, a man serving a sentence in prison cannot be part of a political party. But President Abdulla Yamin sent back the bill without ratifying it.
While the former president Nasheed would lose his position as the President of MDP if the bill had been made in to a law, the government said that it was not the purpose of the bill.
The MP for Gemanafushi constituents, Jameel Usman who presented that bill said that the bill contains a lot of things and contains the rights of convicts and those in custody for investigations.
That bill states that a convict has 60 days to appeal the decision of the parole board to the court.
