No less than 77 percent of capital city Malé’s residents are to vote for presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former president Mohamed Nasheed has said.
Nasheed said in a tweet late Sunday that the Maldivian Democratic Party’s canvassing activities have shown that this amount will vote for Solih in the presidential ballots, scheduled for the 23rd of this month.
The tweet translates to, ‘the first results of MDP’s door-to-door walk in Malé is very clear. Alhamdhulillaah, 77% of Malé residents have vowed to vote for honourable Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’.

While Nasheed’s tweet received praise, Fisheries Minister Mohamed Shainee – a staunch supporter of President Abdulla Yameen whose home in Malé is adorned with large flags of the ruling party and campaign posters – responded to it claiming that they have received a greater guarantee of votes.

In the elections held the past decade, the Maldivian Democratic Party has held majority votes form capital city Malé. This pattern has been consistent for presidential, parliamentary, and local council elections.
In the local council ballots held last year, 12 of the 13 seats for the Malé City Council was won by candidates of the party.
