The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has signed an agreement with Malaysia’s Hextar Global to construct 55 council office buildings across the Maldives under a contractor-financing arrangement.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Maldivian government by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Aishath Muna, while Ali Shareef, Managing Director of Hextar Maldives, signed on behalf of the contractor.
According to the government, the initiative aims to address longstanding infrastructure challenges faced by local councils, with many buildings in poor condition and some at risk of collapse. The new council offices are expected to provide modern, spacious facilities equipped with essential amenities to support council operations.
Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, previously highlighted that some council buildings have not been renovated for several years and emphasized the need to construct new facilities in 187 islands.
The government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the decentralisation system and empowering local administrative regions through such infrastructure developments.
