January this year saw 214,000 tourist arrivals in the Maldives.
Statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment show that this is a 12 percent increase compared to January last year. Last month, on average, 6,900 tourists per day arrived in Maldives.
As of today 233,000 tourist arrivals have been recorded this year, which is an average of 7000 arrivals per day. Tourist arrivals this year is 14 percent higher than that in the same period last year. Last year, this period had 205,000 tourist arrivals recorded.
The main source market so far this year is China, at 40,000 tourists. The second highest number of tourist arrivals are recorded from Russia, at 23,000. Third is Italy, with 22,000 tourist arrivals in the period.
Last year, Maldives reached the target of welcoming 2 million tourists. This year, the government aims to raise the number to 2.2 million.
