The High Court on Thursday decided to begin the appeal hearings of the lower court’s order to remand Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon coming Sunday.
The son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was arrested for allegedly bribing lawmakers to gather support for the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker. The Criminal Court has ruled to keep MP Faris under custody until the end of his trial. Faris is appealing both the arrest and remand orders.
The High Court held the appeal hearing of MP Faris’ arrest order on Thursday. While the court had initially scheduled to commence the appeal of his remand on Thursday as well, the judges decided to postpone the hearings on his remand due to lack of time.
The court also concluded appeal hearings of his arrest on Thursday. Thus it appears that the judges will announce their verdict at the next hearing.
Meanwhile MP Faris is also undergoing a trial at the Criminal Court for identity theft over misusing the flag and logo of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
