No record of any plot to assassinate Nasheed: Police Chief

Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz told Haveeru that following the recent statement by the former Police Intelligence Head Mohamed Hameed that there had been intelligence reports indicating a plot to assassinate Nasheed, Police records were combed for any information of such a plot. Generally, such substantial information would have to be investigated, Police Chief added. "There is no Police record indicating that there was any plot to assassinate the President [Nasheed]. There wasn't any investigation. But such a serious report should have been investigated," Riyaz said. Police intelligence department had received information of two assassination plots against Nasheed, former Police Intelligence Head Mohamed Hameed had told the Parliament's Government Accountability Committee. In this regard, he said that about 10 officials from the armed forces had provided the police with information that such a plot was being planned at a power demonstration at Raalhugandu area by the armed forces in 2010 and another incident where rumors of hazardous chemical being stored at a storage facility owned by a Parliament member. “The chemical was to be used in some kind of an assassination plot.” When asked to name the Parliament member, Hameed said that it was Eydhafushi constituency MP Ahmed ‘Red Wave’ Saleem. Riyaz further said he had asked for a probe into Hameed's claims which had failed to make any Police records. He added that the oversight in logging such serious intel would also be investigated. In addition to Hameed, former military intelligence Head Brigadier General Ahmed Nilam had told the committee that there was a plot to assassinate Nasheed during a military ceremony. He also said the matter had been investigated. However, military Spokesperson Colonel Abdul Raheem refused to confirm Nilam's statement by stressing that no details regarding an officer who has been suspended from duty can be disclosed. Brigadier General Nilam was suspended last week pending an investigation into a case. "As Nilam is currently under investigation, we will not disclose any information related to him. We can only say anything after the investigation is completed," Abdul Raheem said.
