Former President Mohamed Nasheed، who has been sentenced to 13 years in prison on terrorism charges، has been transferred to K. Himmafushi “Asseyri” Prison.
President Nasheed was kept at Dhoonidhoo during his trial. He was kept at Dhoonidhoo even after the verdict، under the custody of Police.
Police and Maldives Correctional Service had confirmed ex-President Nasheed was handed over to the Correctional Services today، transferring him to “Asseyri” Prison.
Media official of MCS informed that Nasheed was transferred to “Asseyri” Prison temporarily، and will be kept separately from other inmates.
However، no official authority had disclosed the reason of the transfer.
Meanwhile، Home Ministry had informed that the construction of a separate jail-apartment for Nasheed was underway in K. Maafushi Prison. It has been a month since Home Minister Umar said the work will be done soon، however، the Government has not informed if the construction of the jail-apartment was completed.
