Malé hospitals to upgrade power systems to prevent disruptions

Efforts are underway to strengthen the electrical capacity of hospitals in the Greater Malé region, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem has said.
While the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Dharumavantha Hospital maintain emergency backup generators, the facilities continue to encounter operational complications during general power outages. To remedy these systemic vulnerabilities, the hospital management group has initiated a collaborative effort with the State Electric Company (STELCO) to upgrade both the grid and emergency capabilities, the chief executive said.
The current setup remains constrained, with backup electricity directed exclusively toward the most essential departments, he told PSM News. The necessity of the upgrade is tied to a rapid modernisation of the regional healthcare system; clinical and technological advancements at IGMH have resulted in a significant surge in electrical consumption over the past two years. It has become imperative to expand backup capacity and replace legacy equipment to meet modern standards, the chief executive articulated.
Beyond flagship institutions, efforts are underway to address infrastructure challenges at other government-operated facilities throughout the greater Malé region, the chief executive confirmed. Following high-level consultations between utility and healthcare stakeholders, administrators are now prioritising these improvements to ensure that essential medical services can be delivered without disruption. Because unexpected interruptions significantly impede clinical care, the upgrades are being fast-tracked to guarantee safety for the substantial volume of citizens seeking treatment daily, hospital officials said.
