70% of Komandoo–Mathikomandoo Land Reclamation Project Completed

Work to reclaim 16.7 hectares of land from Mathikomandoo and link it to Sh. Komandoo has now reached 70% completion, according to MTCC, the project’s contractor.
The project, launched in 2023 to ease Komandoo’s long-standing land scarcity, includes developing a 200-meter causeway between the two islands. MTCC reports that most of the concrete works for the causeway are already finished, alongside ongoing efforts to fortify the reclaimed area.
Key components of the project include 1,690 meters of shore protection rectification in Komandoo, a 1,520-meter large rock revetment, 353 meters of rock toe protection, and a 112-meter geobag revetment in Mathikomandoo.
The government has allocated over MVR 249 million for the two-year project. In addition, plans are underway to reclaim 48.8 hectares of land for an airport in Komandoo.
Komandoo, a 9-hectare island with over 1,900 registered residents, currently hosts only around 600 people—largely due to limited living space, a challenge this project aims to address.
