Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Daud has denied allegations of corruption following claims raised by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee that MVR 14.6 million in assets were created from funds of unknown origin deposited into his personal account between 2023 and 2024.
The allegations were disclosed by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, who chairs the special sub-committee reviewing audit reports of the Polco Housing Project. Nazim stated that Daud had no known business interests and yet received large sums of money, which were allegedly used to invest in properties including a 10-storey building in Machangolhi and an apartment in FW Residence, Hulhumale', both registered under family members.
Nazim further claimed that Daud was named in the Asset Recovery Commission’s report on the MMPRC corruption scandal and had partnered with former ACP Ismail Habeeb and a private citizen to funnel funds into real estate investments. He also alleged that rent from the Machangolhi property had been deposited into Daud’s and his wife’s accounts since 2016.
In response, Daud denied all accusations, stating:
“I have never taken money from anyone in any state matter. I earn my living halal and will not back away from these accusations.”

He claimed that the allegations were part of a smear campaign, referencing anonymous posts from the ‘Hassan Kurusee’ account on X, which he said had leaked stories accusing him of mishandling seized cigarettes at Velana International Airport, including the disappearance of two containers of contraband.
Nazim also noted that the police had initiated an investigation into Daud’s finances but halted the probe prematurely, raising concerns about institutional accountability.
Daud was promoted to Assistant Commissioner on September 17, 2024, under the current administration. His previous roles include Head of Road Police, Detective Investigation Officer, and Deputy Head of the Drug Enforcement Department (DED).
The case has reignited debate over the need for robust asset declaration laws and independent oversight mechanisms, especially as Parliament continues to deliberate the delayed Asset Recovery Bill.
