The President also highlighted the upcoming launch of PayPal in the Maldives, a key component of his administration’s digital economy pledge. He confirmed that the Ministry of Economic Development has worked closely with Ooredoo Fintech and international stakeholders over the past two years to facilitate the service.
“PayPal is about to become available to the people. There are many such opportunities, and the people will benefit greatly from it,” he said.
The introduction of online payment systems, including PayPal, is part of the President’s pledges towards financial inclusion, cross-border commerce, and digital transformation. The service is expected to launch in 2026, enabling freelancers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses to engage with global markets.
