Arrangements Made to Launch PayPal Services in the Maldives

Ooredoo Fintech and PayPal have announced their intent to collaborate in Maldives and are actively working on finalising details of their partnership. The government has welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to enhance access to modern financial services, including PayPal.
Expanding access to financial transactions through modern digital payment systems and electronic wallets (e-wallets) is among key commitments of President Muizzu, and the government has made significant efforts to facilitate the introduction of PayPal in the country.
PayPal is a global leader in online money transactions, and is a service long desired by young people and entrepreneurs. Ooredoo Fintech and PayPal are now preparing to sign an agreement to officially launch PayPal services in the Maldives.
According to Ooredoo Maldives, the intended partnership is expected to benefit both consumers and businesses in the Maldives. Expected to go live in 2026, consumers will be able to shop with PayPal merchants globally, and transfer funds between their PayPal and Ooredoo’s m-Faisaa accounts. Maldivian businesses will also be able to reach and sell to new customers overseas, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards a fully digital economy, it said.
In a statement, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade said the collaboration supports a key government objective to advance the digital economy. The government remains committed to introducing a modern and convenient financial transaction service and enhancing the digital wallet system to expand access to leading global financial platforms, it said.
The Ministry added that launching PayPal in the Maldives represents a major step forward in the government’s efforts to strengthen the nation’s financial system and foster a financial environment that supports innovative digital solutions. This will enable local businesses, freelancers and content creators to participate in the global digital economy, the statement noted.
Welcoming the development, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed described it as a transformative initiative. He said the government facilitated the collaboration in fulfilment of President Dr Muizzu’s pledge to bring leading global digital payment platforms to the Maldives, through continued engagement and close coordination with PayPal and key stakeholders.
The Minister added that the collaboration will enable seamless integration between PayPal and Ooredoo m-Faisaa wallet, empowering businesses and creators to monetise their work and connect effortlessly with global e-commerce platforms.
“This milestone reflects our government’s commitment from day one to strengthening the financial ecosystem, overcoming barriers, and creating new opportunities for Maldivians to thrive in the global digital economy. My sincere thanks to PayPal, Ooredoo Fintech, MMA, and all partners who made this possible,” he wrote in a social media post.
