Fire breaks out at Hulhumale’ building; 21 people moved to shelters

A fire broke out at a six-story building in Hulhumale’ on early Sunday, causing extensive damages to the warehouse located downstairs and cutting off electricity to the entire building, which also houses residential apartments.
The fire took place at lot number 11154 located in Chambeylee Magu 5, Hulhumale’ Phase I.

It was reported to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) at around 3:30 am, and firefighters from the Hulhumale’ Fire Station put it out at around 03:40 am.
According to the MNDF, the fire originated from a pile of waste outside the building. The fire shattered the glass panels in the warehouse located downstairs, spread inside, and caused extensive damage to the merchandise as well as the electrical wiring.

While there were no injuries, the fire damaged the electricity panel and cut off electricity to the entire building.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that they are providing temporary shelter and food to 21 people living in two apartments in the building.

The latest fire comes after a fire in Hiyaa Tower 5 on Friday damaged the building’s plumbing. 140 people living in 30 apartments have been moved to temporary shelters, with repair work expected to take a week.
