Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated the role of the youth population is essential to overcoming global challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He made these remarks while speaking at the official function held in Kulhudhuffushi City to mark International Youth Day.
Speaking at the official function, Vice President Naseem stated that youth could play a more significant role in overcoming the socio-economic impact of COVID-19, climate change, threats to biodiversity, environmental degradation, and ocean acidification challenges. He emphasised that the role of youth in overcoming the challenges and achieving the SDGs is crucial all over the world.
Noting that youth make up half the Maldives’ population, the vice president spoke on the importance of integrating their contributions into every stage of development. He then commended the role of the Maldives’ youth population in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, especially at the Emergency Operations Centre and the national inoculation drive. He added that the youth population of the Maldives is promising for the future of the country.
The vice president further stated that governments around the world need to offer new learning opportunities that engage and educate young people about global issues. He said there is no doubt that youth can be a positive force for development when provided with the knowledge and opportunities they need to thrive.
Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment, Kulhudhuffushi City Council, and the United Nations (UN) in Maldives are hosting International Youth Day activities in Kulhudhuffushi City this year. Marked on August 12 every year, the theme for International Youth Day 2022 is "Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages."
