If the police cannot protect the people’s property, the country’s development will be hampered, Home Minister Ali Ihusaan said on Saturday evening.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the 40th Basic Training Course for New Police Recruits, the Minister emphasized the police's role as an institution that the public relies on even in unsafe situations. He highlighted the special nature of serving in such an institution, stating that it requires courage and an extraordinary mindset to serve the people with love.
According to the Minister, the police service upholds the essential foundations for the development of a country. Therefore, it is crucial for the police to provide services that are acceptable to the people.

Ihusaan expressed pride in the police service and stressed that officers should always strive to serve the people with respect and dignity. He advised the police to fulfill their legal role while respecting the human dignity and even the rights of individuals who commit crimes.
The Minister also stated that maintaining the security and safety of the Maldives should always be the top goal of the police. He articulated the primary objective of the police as creating a situation where every ordinary person on the street can go home each day with the confidence that they will be safe.

The Minister concluded by welcoming the newly recruited police officers.
A total of 138 young men and women enrolled in the six-month 40th Basic Training Course for New Police Recruits. Fifteen participants withdrew from the course due to health issues, while two participants were expelled due to disciplinary issues.
Additionally, one participant voluntarily dropped out despite being given two months to resit subjects, due to failure to meet the required standards. Tragically, one participant died during the course. Consequently, 116 participants graduated from the course.
