"Judge detained on suspicion of involving in a contract killing" – Ex-President Nasheed

The former president and the leader of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed has stated the chief judge of Criminal Court، Abdulla ‘Gaazee’ Mohamed was detained in 2012 on the suspicion of him involving in a contract killing.
Ex-President Nasheed said this on the defence summary statement during his trial، which was not finalized and stated in the hearing as sufficient opportunity was not granted.
The statement of Nasheed reads that، Judge Abdulla released an accused suspect of murder claiming ‘no documents were issued by the hospital’. “Following the release، the said suspect committed another murder،” statement read، “therefore، police and Home Minister depicted that as a contract killing.”
Nasheed further said on the statement that the contractor included Judge Abdulla as a medium to release the ‘killer’ who was then under police custody.
“I was told the killer was already in custody for the suspect of killing someone. Police could not hold him after Judge Abdulla ordered to release him. The killer got free and killed someone else. The Police informed me they believe the killer was release for a killing، as the suspects usually are kept in detention until the trial ends.”
President Nasheed stated، due to the information، he had requested Maldives Police Service to conduct an investigation on the matter، however، did not issue an order conflicting with the constitution and laws.
“I requested Commissioner of Police not to carry it out against the laws. But under the framework of the constitution. When President request something، the concerned ministries and commissions should carry it out in accordance with the law. In the end of 2008، I requested Finance Minister to increase the State Income from 6 billion to 11 billion. It does not mean he should order the army to loot places.”
The statement further said upon an investigation by the Police – as much as they could as they were not able to summon Judge to Police – the authorities concluded Judge Abdulla Mohamed was a threat to the national security.
“After I was informed regarding that، I requested Home Minister to do what is necessary to be safe from the national security threat. I did not ask a specific person to take a specific step.”
Concluding the statement، President Nasheed reiterated he did not give an order to forcefully detain the Judge، and he simply requested the concerned authorities to take the necessary steps in accordance with the law.
He said he requested at Judicial Services Commission، and Maldives Police Services، and it will be proven from the documents and letters at JSC، MPS and the President’s Office.
