Mohamed Ageel, Football Association of Maldives (FAM)’s former finance chief, has been arrested in Thai capital, Bangkok, after the Police were ordered present him before the court for the trial of Bassam Adeel Jaleel, the Association’s disgraced former president.
Criminal Court ordered the Police to present Adeel before the court in their custody for witness testimony in Bassam’s trial. Notably, Ageel has also been charged with aiding in money laundering in connection with the case.
The Police, on Friday, said Adeel has been detained in Thailand for a visa violation, adding that Maldivian authorities were notified of his arrest as he is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.
The Police added that they were undertaking efforts to extradite him to the Maldives.
Ageel has also previously testified against Bassam in one of the many cases against him. In this regard, Ageel testified that Bassam received a monthly allowance of USD 5,000.
Notably, is currently serving a 32-year prison sentence in connection with two charges of money laundering and two charges of corruption in two separate cases over the embezzlement of FAM funds.
The ongoing case against Bassam stems from the allegation that they embezzled USD 1.2 million (MVR 18 million) in funds provided by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to FAM.
