MP Nazim acquitted of all cases pending against him

Judge Saeed Ibrahim delivered the verdict that a group of people committing criminal offences based on Nazim’s words was not sufficient to hold him accountable for the crime, thus the case was deemed invalid. “In reference the evidence provided by the Prosecutor General, the actions of Ahmed Nazim of Maafannu Niyadhuru has done nothing which can be legally criminalized, and with the final verdict the case is closed.” One of the cases filed against Nazim charges him of corruption through utilizing his position as the managing director of the company Namira Engineering and Trading, of which he was a shareholder, to submit bid proposals to the former atolls ministry in response to a tender published on December 31, 2003 by the ministry requesting interested bidders submit estimates for 15,000 Maldivian flags. The charges read that Nazim had instructed his employees to submit project estimates in the name of four unregistered companies Sea View Maldives Private Limited, Faafu Tailors, Male Gamu Tailors and Needlework Tailors, and consequentially had been awarded the project as well. The same had been done again in response to a tender advertised by the former ministry on January 18, 2005. Charges of a second case filed against him state that several companies in which Nazim held a share had also submitted proposals to purchase sound systems for mosques, before an announcement was made. A third case filed by the PG states that Nazim had acted out in corruption in winning a tender advertised by the same ministry to purchase harbor lights Judge Saeed concluded that given the witnesses presented by the PG are those directly involved in forging the documents they cannot be considered reliable witnesses. State attorney Abdulla Raabiu mentioned to the court that in previous similar case witnesses were approved by the court to which the judge questioned if there were transcripts of such a case to which the state attorney replied that he remembered such as case but it was about indecent behavior. The judge concluded that both cases were of no relevance.
