Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, who was arrested during the Fishermen’s Day protest, has been admitted to IGMH for a minor operation following injuries sustained during his arrest.
Mauroof, who also serves as Secretary General of the Bodu Kanneli Masverinnge Union (BKMU), was remanded in custody for five days last Thursday along with other fishermen.
Footage of Mauroof being dragged down stairs and off a boat during the arrest continues to circulate on social media.

MDP Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader Hussain Ziyadh confirmed to Sun that Mauroof was taken to IGMH on Saturday morning, two days after he was arrested, and is undergoing surgery due to an injury that required surgery to stop the bleeding.
“He definitely needs the surgery today, right now,” Ziyadh said. Mauroof appeared visibly pale in recent images circulating on social media.

The MDP launched an emergency movement on Friday demanding the release of Mauroof and the other detained fishermen. Ziyadh said the campaign would continue until all protestors are freed.
The protest began Wednesday morning, with the union expressing frustration over the government’s failure to fulfill its promise to buy and market the fish caught by local fishermen.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, in a post on X, acknowledged that the biggest concern among large fish fishermen is the delay in payments from private companies. He said the government is working to intervene and fulfill its promises.
