Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s legal team has said that Nasheed was arrested by the police against the law, and requested the Criminal Court for an order to release him.
Criminal Court Media Official Ahmed Mohamed Manik said that Nasheed’s legal team has filed a case asking for a ‘habeas corpus’, and requested the court to rule that Nasheed was arrested illegally and to issue an order to facilitate his immediate release.
He said that following this case filed by Nasheed’s legal team, the police have been notified at around 7:06pm to provide a detailed report of how Nasheed was arrested.
Ahmed Mohamed Manik said that Nasheed was arrested following an order by Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court to the police, to arrest him in order to produce him in court at 4:00pm tomorrow.
Nasheed has been charged under article 81 of the Penal Code with arresting an innocent person, following the alleged illegal arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed during Nasheed’s presidency. Hulhumale’ Court has said that the police were ordered to arrest Nasheed because he has failed to cooperate with the court in the past.
