Facing mounting internal rivalry ahead of the upcoming presidential election, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is set to commemorate its 20th anniversary with a year-long programme of events across the country, party officials said.
The plans were outlined at a press conference by party president Abdulla Shahid and chairperson Fayyaz Ismail. Celebrations are scheduled to begin on Thursday, the official anniversary, with a morning tea at the MDP's 'Dhandikoshi Jagaha' campaign hub, followed by the party's annual flag-hoisting ceremony at 9:00 a.m., with events planned not only in Malé but also across numerous islands, according to Ismail.
As the party prepares to mark its milestone, Ismail described the initiative as an opportunity to reflect on the MDP's legacy and the political environment that shaped it. "We intend to implement programmes that will span the entire year," he said. "The objective is to educate current generations about the reform efforts pursued over the past 20 to 30 years and the conditions that prevailed during that period, and to demonstrate that the MDP will remain at the forefront of driving the necessary changes for the country in the future and achieving success in those efforts."
Tensions within the party have surfaced in recent weeks as several prominent figures compete for the MDP's presidential nomination. Among the most consequential developments is the return of former President Mohamed Nasheed, who rejoined the party after departing amid internal disputes. His comeback was swiftly followed by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's declaration of candidacy.
That contest is expanding, with other senior figures appearing to stake out positions ahead of the primary. Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, President Abdulla Shahid, and former Vice President Faisal Naseem are all regarded as potential contenders.
