Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL)’s Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Shareef has announced that the company is seeking consultation from Modalis Infrastructure Partners Inc. to ensure that the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) meets international standards, prioritises safety and offers comprehensive services.

The company has worked with several leading international airports around the world.
In a special video message providing an update on the progress of the airport terminal projects, CEO Shareef described President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as the driving force behind making the terminal development project a reality. He said the project is bing carried out under the President’s direct guidance and recommendation, and expressed gratitude for his continued support.
Shareef noted that the final preparations for the opening of the new terminal are now underway. He added that all work are being carried out in accordance with the highest international standards and procedures.
"We are seeking the views and consultations of Modalis, an experienced company that has worked with major airports around the world, to ensure that the new terminal at Velana International Airport meets international standards, is safe and efficient," Shareef said.
Shareef added that the new terminal has been developed with the latest technology which are not available at the existing passenger terminal. The terminal’s interior and exterior features local cultural elements, and the terminal layout provides passengers with spacious areas to move around comfortably, he noted.
The new terminal, which covers an area of 72,000 square feet, is designed to accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually. The terminal will have 47 check-in counters designed with locally inspired designs, six self-service kiosks and 24 counters dedicated for seaplane passengers.
The new passenger terminal is scheduled to open on 26 July, to coincide with the Maldives’ Independence Day. MACL has launched an official countdown to the opening of the terminal.
