Lawyer Haseen submits forms of required 3,000 members for new political party

Prominent Lawyer Abdulla Haseen has submitted membership forms and required documents at the Elections Commission to form his “Maldives Labor and Social Democratic Party”.
The commission’s spokesperson Ahmed Akram revealed via twitter that Lawyer Haseen had on Thursday submitted the required documents along with the required number of membership forms after the commission in early August gave Haseen the green light to form a new political party.
This is the second time EC has given the lawyer the approval to form a new political party. The first time round, lawyer Haseen had failed to carry out the procedure of registration within the span of three months. Haseen submitted the third application to the Elections Commission, to form a new political party in July, with two other applications being in April.
Haseen, who was a member of now ruling MDP, left the party in July, and has since assured that his decision was not due to any issues with the party.
The lawyer who was known for leading opposition MDP activities, said that the new political party will not be for or against any of the current political parties, adding that the motive behind creating a new political party is to ensure laborers' rights and to work towards maintaining social justice.
Maldives currently has six registered political parties:
The formation of a new political party in the country requires the membership of 3,000 members and the political party funds given by the state will only be received by parties that have at least 10,000 members.
