Majlis rejects MDP motion on housing delays

The Parliament on Wednesday rejected the motion submitted by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) over delays in allocating flats and land plots under the previous administration’s housing schemes.
The motion was tabled by MDP MP Mauroof Zakir (Kendhikulhudhoo), but only 11 members voted in favor, while 40 voted against. Two ruling PNC members, Maafannu West MP Mohamed Musthafa Ibrahim and Henveiru South MP Hussain Imran Latheef, did not vote.
The resolution raised concerns over:
The government’s failure to hand over 4,000 completed flats to listed beneficiaries
Delays in allocating land from Gulhifalhu, Hulhumale' Phase III, and Giravaru lagoon
Stalled evaluation of applications for flats and plots in Hulhumale'
Mauroof criticized the government for halting progress under various pretexts and expressed concern over the launch of a new USD 600 million housing initiative without explaining the delay in existing projects.

“Other projects are being resumed without giving priority to housing,” he said.
The MDP recently submitted six housing demands to the government, giving it two years to implement them. These include:
Halting new dredging until completion of dredging in Hulhumale' Phase I–III, Giravaru lagoon, Gulhi lagoon, and Uthuru Thila Falhu
Allocating flats to contractors as per the original list
Securing Indian Line of Credit (LOC) financing for the remaining 9,763 flats
Commencing work on 7,000 flats already handed over
Housing remains one of the most pressing issues in the Male' region, where thousands live in rental accommodation. Civil society groups and opposition parties continue to urge the government to expedite land and flat distribution.
