Former President and the leader of the opposition، Mohamed Nasheed، who has been sentenced to 13 years in prison on terrorism charges، has been transferred back to Maafushi Prison.
Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) has taken Nasheed under the authority’s custody at 20:45 on Sunday evening، whilst he was at Maafannu Yaagoothuge.
Nasheed was changed to house arrest two months back as advised by the doctors to offer him a stress free environment.
Following the MCS officers arriving at Yaagoothuge، supporters of Nasheed had created a little protest and obstructed MCS vehicle from moving.
Police had used pepper spray due the protest، which affected Nasheed، Majlis members، journalists and many who were gathered at the area.
Ex-President Nasheed was later taken to Maafushi via a speedboat from T-Jetty area.
The services’ media coordinator Moosa Rameez told local media that the authority took the decision to transfer Nasheed to the authority’s facility at Maafushi on Sunday، after assessing his medical reports.
Rameez further said until an official decision is made on the sentence، Nasheed will be kept in Prison for the remainder of the sentence.
Meanwhile، Nasheed’s legal team has stated that taking Nasheed back to Maafushi Prison is unconstitutional as he was notified that he will remain under house arrest for the remainder of his sentence.
The State had also appealed his 13 year prison sentence in the High Court.
