Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has informed the decision to take over the two regional harbours in the Maldives.
CEO of MPL Mahdhy Imad said today that efforts are underway for MPL to take over the Gan and Kulhudhuffushi Harbours.
“Those harbours are not being maintained properly. They don’t have the money or the expertise. Because we would be able to operate them better, we have decided to take over them. We will not make much profit from them,” he said.
He said that the harbours will not develop if the current model continues to be followed, and that the harbours should be made independent only after they can stand on their own two feet.
He said that no changes will be made to the prices of services at the harbours.
“Because we are experiencing tough times economically, we plan to stick to the current model and same fees, and move forward slowly,” he said.
