Nasheed should be freed but through legal procedures: Dunya

Former President Mohamed Nasheed should be freed but within the Maldives justice system, says former foreign minister Dunya Maumoon.
In an interview with news outlet Avas, the former minister said that she wants to see Nasheed receive justice but that it should not be based on rulings made by foreign organizations.
Dunya said that it was important that the self-exiled opposition leader be freed and that it should be done by going through the relevant legal procedures.
Highlighting that Nasheed had received much international attention, Dunya said that the government answered to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and other international organizations that Maldives has membership with.
She added  that the people want to see president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration reform the judiciary in order for everyone to receive equal legal rights.
Noting the sacrifices made by political leaders and their families, she said that the recent political turmoil had been difficult for her as well.
