Male' local market area road development completed and opened to public

The second phase of the development of Boduthakurufaanu Road has been completed and officially opened to the public, marking a key milestone in efforts to ease congestion in the capital’s commercial district.
Construction of the roads of local market-area commenced on 9 December. Under the second phase, a 250-metre stretch from the local market to North Harbour has been paved and upgraded. The road was widened by six metres through dredging and land reclamation, significantly expanding its carriageway capacity.
Prior to the opening, a tree-planting ceremony was held to green the newly developed corridor. Twelve Cabinet Ministers participated in the initiative, alongside senior state officials and employees of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), who collectively planted trees along the roadway.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, announced the opening of the road and outlined its strategic importance.
“This area was previously a one-way street, which created significant traffic challenges. The government has widened the road and designated it as a two-way carriageway. This will provide an adequate solution to congestion,” the Minister stated.
The Boduthakurufaanu Road development is being implemented in multiple phases. The first phase covering 140 metres from the number 1 jetty area to the local market has already been completed and opened. With the completion of the second phase, traffic now flows through the upgraded section.
MTCC commenced the second phase with the objective of completing the works before Ramadan, successfully meeting the target timeline.
The overall project will upgrade a total of 1,088 metres, extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to North Harbour. Upon full completion, the government expects the project to significantly reduce congestion in the commercial port area and enhance the efficiency of goods transportation within Malé.
