President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that PayPal services will be fully available in the Maldives by the end of January, a major boost for the country's digital and creative economy.
The President revealed the timeline during the "Youth Coffee with President" session held last night, concluding the National Youth Conference 2025. He stressed that enhancing global accessibility for creative professionals and digital entrepreneurs remains a core priority of his administration's manifesto.
President Muizzu noted that extensive preparations have reached the final stage and expressed confidence in meeting the January deadline. The introduction of PayPal, he said, will unlock significant opportunities for Maldivians to engage with international markets.
He further announced that Bank of Maldives' Swipe payment service will enter testing within the month, signalling additional economic and financial advancements ahead. The President underscored that the nation's broader transformation depends on the active involvement and support of young people.
PayPal services are being rolled out through Ooredoo Fintech, which recently received an Inward Remittance Licence from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
Khalid Al Hammadi, CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Fintech Maldives, welcomed the milestone, stating the company is proud to enable PayPal's launch. He credited strong government backing under President Muizzu's administration and affirmed Ooredoo's commitment to partnering with stakeholders to drive economic productivity, especially in digital and creative sectors.
