Senior PPM lawmaker accuses EC of 'obstructing efforts' to establish opposition party

Ahmed Nihan, a senior lawmaker of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has accused Elections Commission (EC) and its chief Ahmed Shareef of obstructing efforts to establish an opposition party.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Nihan urged the commission to stop such efforts.
Idhikolhu Siyaasee Party eh Rajjeygai otha nudhinumah @ElectionsMv aai E muassasaage raees @ShareefRangondi kurahvvamun gendhavaa massakaiy vaguthun vaguthah huttaalumah dhannavan.
EC has refused to accept former President Abdulla Yameen as PPM’s leader after stating that the last PPM congress, where Yameen was made party leader, violated set procedures.
After PPM filed a court case against EC, the commission requested the High Court to change the judges’ bench presiding over the case after expressing concern that the current bench would not give a justified verdict.
EC chief Shareef has said that an opposition party is important, but only one with a leadership established according to the laws and regulations.
