Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) Parliamentary Group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is currently in Sri Lanka to meet party leader and former president, Mohamed Nasheed.
Although MDP has not made any official statements on the matter, local media reports that Solih is visiting Nasheed to discuss MDP's upcoming congress.
The congress will be held in Alif Alif Atoll's Ukulhas on June 30, where several important decisions are to be taken, according to the party.
Solih, who is in the front line of the party, is rumored to be MDP's alternative candidate should Nasheed remain unable to run for presidency.
Although MDP's recent primary has given Nasheed the party's seal of approval, the Elections Commission (EC) has made it clear that he would not be able to run in the elections due to his ongoing 13-year jail sentence.
MDP's course of action for the election will be decided during the congress. In addition, members will also discuss the reason for the opposition alliance's failure thus far to nominate a single candidate from all the parties.
