Former Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail held political consultations during a luncheon meeting attended by senior members of the Democrats and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The meeting signals renewed political dialogue as both leaders have announced their intention to contest in the MDP’s 2028 presidential primary.
Although specific details of the discussion were not disclosed, Fayyaz stated that the meeting included a wide-ranging exchange of views on the current political landscape and future strategy. He emphasized that meaningful reform can only be achieved through the collaborative efforts of those committed to steering the country back on course.
The informal meeting was hosted by Nasheed and included Democrats’ President Imthiyaz Fahmy, former Democrats President Hassan Latheef—who recently returned to MDP—and around 20 general members of the Democrats.
This gathering comes just weeks after Nasheed expressed his intention to seek the MDP nomination for the 2028 presidential election, reaching out to party members to gauge support. Fayyaz has also confirmed his candidacy for the upcoming presidential race, positioning the two as potential rivals within the party’s primary process.
