Maldives submits response to UN Working Group regarding Nasheed’s trial

Maldives has officially submitted its response to United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention، regarding the trial of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
The documents were submitted to the UN Working Group by Maldives’ Ambassador to EU، Ahmed Shian.
Speaking to the press following the submission، Ambassador Shian said ex-President Nasheed was ‘not a victim of politicized process’ but rather prosecuted for a serious offense of ‘kidnapping a judge’.
The press conference was participated by OMNIA Strategy partner Toby Cadman، who has highlighted that abducting a judge unlawfully is an offense of utmost severity in the Maldives، as well as in other countries، where the punishment is severe on such crimes.
He also noted that Nasheed’s petition in UN working group diverts the seriousness of the offense committed.
Cadman further noted that submission by Nasheed in UN working group contains falsified information.
In addition Cadman said that the law should be enforced equally to everyone، and a sovereign system must be upheld to continue in a democracy.
The case was sent on Nasheed’s behalf to the UN Working Group on April 30. The case was submitted by former First Lady (Madam) Laila Ali، the wife of ex-President Mohamed Nasheed.
