Children's Ombudsperson, Niumaath Shafeeg has said that encouraging children to take responsibility is an important step to develop their character and build a strong generation.
In a message to mark Children’s Day celebrated today, Niumaath noted the significance of this year’s theme "Happy Times, Happy Relationships, Happy Children". The aim of the theme, according to Niumaath, is to highlight the importance of having fun with parents and the relationship between parents and to ensure a happy life and a healthy future for children.
Spending time with children strengthens the relationship between children and their parents, creates a sense of happiness and security, making it easier for them to share their feelings and builds their character, she said.
The Children's Ombudsman said parents must ensure that the happy times they spend with their children must be productive and beneficial.
She listed such productive exercises for parents as helping children develop the skills of interest and engaging them in age-appropriate activities, encouraging them to experience and learn for themselves, and giving them the opportunity to make their own decisions.
Additionally, Niumaath also pointed out that every child possesses a unique identity, different skill sets and talents, urging parents to allow children to express themselves in their own unique way and enable them to take initiative.
Every year, the world celebrates May 10 as Children's Day.
