Muizzu Urges Opposition to Join Digital Reform Drive to Eradicate Corruption

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on opposition parties to cooperate with the government in its efforts to eliminate corruption, as the administration launches a nationwide digital transformation project titled “Maldives 2.0.”
Speaking at the official inauguration of the initiative, the President underscored that corruption is deeply rooted in the country’s service delivery systems, and said the digital transformation is aimed at creating a transparent and efficient governance framework. He emphasized that reducing human intervention in state processes would significantly curb corruption.
The President’s remarks come amid criticisms from opposition parties, particularly the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), who allege that the digitization efforts are a cover for introducing electronic voting and manipulating electoral processes. MDP President Abdulla Shahid posted that Maldivians seek a democratic life that respects dignity and rights, not “lies under the guise of Maldives 2.0.”
Responding to these claims, President Muizzu questioned why opposition parties object whenever initiatives to eliminate corruption are proposed. “Maldives 2.0 is the largest anti-corruption measure in the state’s history,” he said, adding that the system would give citizens complete control over their information while ensuring high-quality, transparent services.
The President expressed confidence that the reforms would elevate the Maldives in international corruption and press freedom rankings. “This is what the people want. We will walk this journey with them,” he said, appealing to all parties to work together in building a governance model recognized globally for integrity and service excellence.
