Parliamentary proceedings halted to save Nasheed, opposition claims

Opposition coalition claims on Wednesday that the parliament work is halted to save Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) said Nasheed fears for his position after Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) held its Chairperson election last week.
In a press conference held by the coalition's parliamentary group, parliament member for Maduvvaree constituency Adam Shareef said the government had "seized the parliament."p
"Parliament work is halted willfully by the government. As their competitive opposition, we harshly criticize this," he said.
Parliament sessions have been ended a short while after starting them as there is "no work scheduled" or on their agenda.
He further said that Nasheed had worked to ensure the parliament was a responsible, and accountable branch after accepting the role of Parliament Speaker. According to Adam Shareef, the government had always attempted to merge the administration with the parliament.
"Since then, there have been various challenges and a dangerous attack on Nasheed as well, and the power of the parliament has been completely ejected or [the government] seized the parliament," he said.
Adam Shareef said that the work of the parliament committees needs to be strengthened and expedited. He said the public would like to know whether the committees would produce the best results and that he had proposed a performance audit to be conducted.
He said that since the parliament has been "hijacked," Nasheed's work is "locked" as well.
