Jumhooree Party (JP)'s council on Sunday night elected Qasim Ibrahim as the party's leader again.
JP's founder Qasim was elected as party leader unanimously by the 61 members present at the council meeting.
The only candidate for the post, Qasim was elected for a period of five years.
Qasim had lost his position as leader after the Criminal Court found him guilty of offering bribes to lawmakers and sentenced him to three years in jail. According to an amendment to the Political Parties Act, individuals convicted of criminal offences cannot hold senior posts in a political party.
Council member Dr. Hussain Rasheed had been filling in as acting leader since then.
However, the High Court overturned Qasim's jail sentence last week Monday, and JP's council approved the motion filed by the party's president, Ali Waheed, to elect a leader.
