President Muizzu Announces Start of Land Reclamation at Giraavaru Falhu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that land reclamation works at Giraavaru Falhu have officially commenced, marking the next major phase in the Government’s efforts to expand land availability in the Greater Malé Region.
In a post shared on his official X account on Friday, the President confirmed that reclamation activities began on Friday morning. He had previously stated, following the completion of Hulhumalé Phase III, that Giraavaru Falhu would be the next priority reclamation project.
The works are being carried out using the trailing suction hopper dredger TSHD Oranje, one of the largest dredgers deployed in the Maldives. The project plans to reclaim a total of 169 hectares at Giraavaru Falhu. Of this, 56 hectares had already been reclaimed in earlier phases, leaving 113 hectares to be completed under the current phase.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure is proceeding with a re-draw for land allocations following revisions to the Giraavaru Falhu land use plan. The re-draw is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 31 January 2026, at 9:30 am at the Social Centre.
The commencement of reclamation at Giraavaru Falhu forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to address housing demand and support sustainable urban development in the capital region.
