Nasheed would have faced life imprisonment in UK – Toby

Former President Mohamed Nasheed would have faced life imprisonment in UK، as abduction، kidnapping and terror charges carry maximum penalties in UK، says Toby Cadman، one of the partners in Omnia Strategy LLP، which was appointed by Maldives government for legislative framework strengthening.
Speaking at the joint press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon، Toby said the charges pressed against Nasheed were serious matters، which carries maximum penalties in many jurisdictions، such as UK and Spain.
“Throughout the legal proceedings against former President Nasheed، his constitutional right to effective legal representation has been guaranteed and when his legal representatives boycotted the proceedings، the former President was repeatedly reminded of his right to alternative legal representation،” Toby said.
In addition، Toby stated that he had visited former President and noted that he is not in solitary confinement and is detained in a facility that would not only meet international best practices، but arguably exceeded any acceptable level.
The press conference was participated by Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon، Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed and Additional Secretary at the Foreign Ministry، Liusha Zahir.
