Dhidhdhoo Land Reclamation Project is the Largest Investment Ever Made by a Government in a Single Island: Latheef

The Member of Parliament for the Dhidhdhoo constituency, Abdul Latheef Mohamed (Latheebe), has stated that the Dhidhdhoo land reclamation project is the largest investment ever made by a government in a single island to date.
Speaking on MMTV’s “Bodu Khabaru” (Big News) program, the MP stated that this project would lead to the development of an entirely “New Dhidhdhoo.”
The MP noted that the project, which commenced physical work on January 5th, is progressing at a very rapid pace. Highlighting that previous governments had neglected the development of Dhidhdhoo, Latheef stated that this project is a source of great joy for the entire Boduthiladhunmathi region.
Project Details and Progress
While the project to reclaim 115 hectares of land for the construction of Dhidhdhoo Airport is being carried out by MACL, 21 hectares have been reclaimed so far. This accounts for 18.75 percent of the total work. To expedite the process, a world-class large-scale dredger, the ‘Leiv Eiriksson’—which has a capacity of 46,000 cubic meters—is currently being utilized.
The construction of an airport in Dhidhdhoo was a key campaign pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during the 2023 presidential election. According to MP Latheef, this project is clear evidence that the President will fulfill his promises to the people under his robust policies.
While Latheef stated that the Dhidhdhoo land reclamation project is the largest investment a government has made in a single island to date, it is not yet known whether the relevant authorities have disclosed the total cost of the project. Notably, one of the largest previous investments in a single island was the Hanimaadhoo International Airport development project, which cost $137 million.
